Author Interview with Helen Walton

Helen Walton is a tea drinking, chocoholic, romance writer. Stories are her obsession, and she adores creating sweet and sensual romances containing a sprinkling of humor and the all-important happy ending. She lives in Australia with her family, and menagerie of quirky animals where they all take her away from her book world and demand to be fed. Lucky for them, she enjoys cooking but prefers baking.

Tell us a little bit about you.

I was called a daydreamer when I was young, but I think I was always meant to be a writer so my imagination could run wild. Writing is a happy place for me, the same as when reading. There’s magic in books. And we all deserve a little magic in our lives.

Why did you choose to write this genre?

I grew up with fairytales, then I progressed onto my mum’s Mills and Boon books. I think it was inevitable that I’d combine the two and write paranormal/fantasy romance with magical beings finding their one true love.

Who is your favourite author who writes in the same genre as you?

Jeaniene Frost, I love her Night Huntress series and her vampires.

Tell us, whether it’s book one or not, which book did you enjoy writing the most and why?

I loved writing Isabel and the Werewolf Beast because I love twisting things up. Isabel is a sassy, vampire trapped in a curse until Dante, the book-loving werewolf ends up trying to help her. The two shouldn’t fall for each other because they’re immortal enemies, but… well there are some surprises for the pair.

Is there something you wish you knew when you first started that you know now?

Listen to my inner voice more.

What was your last five star read?

Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver. I loved the dark humour and the Dexter vibes.

If you could give one piece of advice to new or aspiring authors, what would it be?

Find your tribe, the ones who support you, encourage you, cheer you on, and pick you up on your bad days.

What is one thing that drives you mental but no-one else seems to complain about?

The sound of people chewing!

What are the most important life lessons you’ve learnt?

Love is never ending even if the person is no longer here.

What is something you can’t live without.

Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate.

When you aren’t writing, what do you love doing?

I love gardening, riding my horses, and spending time with my family, or reading and pretending nothing else exists except for the story I’m immersed in.

Picnic by the lake or dinner at a five star restaurant?

A picnic by the lake with a cosy blanket to sit on, delicious morsels of finger food, a calm breeze ruffling my hair, soft sunshine stroking my skin, the gentle lap of the water on the shore, birds singing in the trees, pretty wildflowers dancing around us as we spend a lazy afternoon together.

What was your last release?

Isabel and the Werewolf Beast is my newest release coming out on the 14th of October, my daughter’s birthday, it’s a special present for her since she loves Beauty and the Beast and my book is a retelling of the story with a twist of vampires and werewolves.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on the sequel to my new release, Elise in Werewolf Land the next book in the Vampire Tales series. It’s an Alice in Wonderland retelling of course with a twist.

What is your “gateway” book for those who may not have read your work before?

Fae’s Song, book 1 in my Summer Court series, is a fae romance. Niamh has a secret power in her voice, but when she meets Prince Fintan, he’s certain she’s his longed for fated mate. Convincing her they belong together is harder than the two-hundred-year-old prince ever thought it would be.
